Sony is countering Apple by developing its own handheld products that include a tablet-like device and a smartphone VGP-BPS21A battery that can download and play PlayStation games, The Wall Street Journal said in a news report on Thursday.

The tablet-like device being developed will include netbook, e-book reader and VGP-BPS21A gaming functions, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter. The device could compete with Apple’s iPad, which offers Web browsing, multimedia, e-reading and gaming functions.

Sony is working with Ericsson on the handset, the report said. Both the companies have a long history of developing VGP-BPS21A handsets together, and recently launched the Xperia X10 smartphone, which is built with the Android OS.

Sony is also developing an online media platform called Sony Online Service that will include movies, music, games and television shows, the report said. The online service, expected vgp-bps21a to launch later this month, will offer content already available in Apple’s iTunes store. Sony, however, will offer downloadable PlayStation games that could differentiate it from iTunes.

Sony already offers Reader e-book readers and the PlayStation Portable gaming vgp-bps21a battery device.

Sony representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment on this report.

Sony made a minor splash when it rolled out the ability to buy HD movies from the Playstation Network (previously HD movies were available for rental but not purchase). Movies from vgp-bps13a/b battery all six major studios (20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros.) will be available and Sony claims they’re the first service to offer HD titles to own from all six.

From the press release:

“Securing high definition content from these studios is another significant milestone further validating vgp-bps13a/b PlayStation Network as a complete entertainment network in the home. PlayStation Network is the first and only service to deliver high definition home entertainment from all six major studios, directly to consumers for download,” said Peter Dille, senior vice president, marketing and PlayStation Network, SCEA. “PlayStation Network continues to offer the most comprehensive catalogue VGP-BPS13A/B of HD movies to PlayStation Network members that realize the wide-ranging entertainment power of the PS3 system.”

The upgraded service is available today in the United States and will roll out in the U.K., France, Germany, and Spain soon (sorry Canada, it looks like you’re once again out of luck).

So what’s this going to cost? Here’s what seems to be ’standard’ pricing for titles, based on browsing the online store for a few moments:
New Releases Older Titles
HD Rental $5.99 US HD Rental $4.50 US
HD Own $19.99 US HD Own $17.99 US
SD Rental $3.99 US SD Rental $2.99 US
SD Own $14.99 US SD Own $9.99 US

Those of us with older PS3s might want to keep an eye on file sizes too. The HD file size for 2012 was about 7.5 GB, though other titles I checked (Zombieland, Where the Wild Things Are) were as small as 4 GB. A 60-80 GB drive is going to fill up pretty fast if you try to build a significant movie collection VGP-BPS13A/B (particularly if you’ve already got a bunch of music and games on your PS3). You PS3 Slim owners probably don’t have to be as worried about file size.

As far as I can tell, these are 720P movies; personally I think I’d rather spend a few more bucks VGP-BPS13A/B battery and get a 1080P version on Blu-ray that won’t soak up drive space and that I can lend to friends. Granted there’s the convenience of downloading a copy of the movie without leaving home, and that’s worth something.

Apple A1185 battery has disabled, without explanation, a jailbreak detection API in iOS less than six months after introducing it. Device management vendors say the reasons for the decision are a mystery, but insist they can use alternatives to discover if an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad has been modified so they can load and modify applications outside of Apple’s iTunes-based App Store.

Jailbroken devices pose a serious security threat to the enterprise. Even if the end user doesn’t intend to load malware, he will be completely unaware of malware present in unauthorized apps.

Managing smartphones calls for new realism and flexibility

Apple declined to comment.

The new API was part of a bundle of mobile device management (MDM) APIs released in June with iOS 4.0. These APIs were available to third-party MDM applications, such as AirWatch or Sybase’s Afaria. With the new APIs, these servers could access directly a range of features and information in iOS or on the device. But in the recently-released 4.2 version, the A1185 battery API intended for detecting jailbreaks has been either removed or disabled.

This detection API let the MDM applications in effect ask the operating system if it had been compromised. Jailbreak exploits A1185 battery typically change a number of operating system files, and exploit one or another low-level OS features to let A1185 battery users directly load their own or third-party applications. In October 2010, two separate jailbreaks made use of different vulnerabilities uncovered in the iOS boot ROM, for example. Apple A1185 battery warns that jailbreaking voids the device’s warranty and could damage the phone.

Previously, some MDM vendors had created their own series of OS checks to detect jailbreaks, analogous to those performed by an anti-virus application on a PC, to discover if a jailbreak had occurred.

Dell, which lost a bidding war for storage vendor 3PAR in September, is offering about $876 million for Compellent Technologies, which is seen as offering the best chance for the computer maker to expand its data center technology business.

Dell and Compellent said Thursday in a joint statement that Dell latitude d420 battery was offering $27.50 per share in cash, which amounts to 18% less than Compellent’s valuation based on Wednesday’s stock closing price. Compellent shares have doubled in the last two months on speculation that it would be bought, and some analysts say Dell is likely to have to pay more. At the end of October, the company had $13.4 billion in cash and short-term investment.
In our final Whiteboard tutorial on Fibre Channel over Ethernet, Storage Switzerland’s George Crump walks us through what an actual implementation of FCoE would look like, including what the tangible benefits will be.

Dell is going after Compellent as part of a major expansion of its Data Center Solutions unit, which sells servers, storage, and networking gear. Dell latitude d430 battery in June said it planned to generate $30 billion in sales from its data-center business by the end of fiscal 2014 from the $17 billion expected at the end of the current fiscal year ending in January. The expansion is key to raising Dell’s profitability. Storage-related sales carry much higher margins than PC desktops and laptops that made up 56% of Dell’s revenue in the third quarter.

Compellent is seen as Dell’s last chance at buying the storage technology it needs to battle rivals EMC, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM. Dell duked it out with HP over 3PAR and lost after failing in September to beat the latter’s offer of more than $2.3 billion. “It looks like a Hail Mary pass,” Benjamin Woo, analyst for market researcher IDC, said of the latest acquisition talks.

Get the knowledge to holistically address your storage performance and efficiency problems and opportunities
Storage Strategies for Modern Information Infrastructures

Compellent sells storage software and hardware that’s viewed as particularly useful to companies building cloud-computing environments, a major IT growth area. Compellent’s third-quarter results reflect the company’s success. Compellent reported a 15% increase in revenue as the number of customers grew from 179 to 2,303.

Despite the strength of Compellent’s technology, analysts disagree over whether Dell can make good use of it. Woo is concerned that Compellent’s products would confuse potential customers because the technology would compete directly with Dell’s EqualLogic product line. Compellent and EqualLogic are used by small to midsize companies. Neither is able to scale to the level needed by large corporations, which is why Dell had wanted 3PAR so badly; the company is already entrenched in the enterprise, according to experts.

Roger Cox, analyst for Gartner, is less concerned about the overlap, arguing that Dell and Compellent will eventually be able to re-architect the technology so it’s ready for the enterprise. “Compellent is really a good natural next step for Dell latitude c610 battery to enhance its storage portfolio,” Cox said.

Woo isn’t so sure, pointing out that Dell has never been a technology innovator and has never shown that it can rework products to do considerably more in areas critical to businesses, such as data centers. “This is a pure and simple gamble, and I’m not sure Dell and Compellent can pull it off,” he said.

One element analysts agree on is the future of Dell’s partnership with EMC, if it acquires Compellent. Dell sells EMC’s Clariion storage products, which also fit in the same mid-market as Compellent and EqualLogic. Industry observers do not expect Dell to continue selling Clariion aggressively to new customers, given that gross profit margins will be multiples higher with its own products. “There’s still going to be some kind of relationship, but it won’t be like it used to be,” Cox said.

Dell will likely continue to support current Clariion customers and sell the EMC product to customers who won’t consider anything else. That’s likely to make the relationship between EMC and Dell even more “fractious and contentious” then it has been, since Dell went after EMC rival 3PAR, Cox said.

Hewlett-Packard(HP) has won a highly lucrative and bitterly contested battle against Kodak as the printer supplier for photo kiosks in thousands of Wal-Mart stores, giving HP pavilion dv4 batery a dynamic and long-lasting revenue stream for its ink, toner, and paper. Kodak’s loss inspired its CMO to tweet a message to HP saying, “Shame on your tactics.”

There is an article from Wall Street Journal:

The HP kiosk rollout, which Wal-Mart says will be completed by this summer, will dislodge existing photo booths made by Kodak, which has provided its kiosks to Wal-Mart since at least 2006.Wal-Mart has 8,416 retail units under various brand names in 15 countries. . . .”These kiosks stay installed for nine or 10 years,” H-P Chief Executive Mark Hurd told investors at a conference in San Francisco on Tuesday morning. HP(hp pavilion dv5 battery) gets “100% supplies connect,” he said, referring to the sales of the additional printing products.

Not surprisingly, the Kodak folks were less than pleased with Wal-Mart’s decision but turned their anger toward competitor HP instead of decision-maker Wal-Mart as Kodak CMO Jeffrey Hayzlett accused HP pavilion dv6 battery of cratering its prices on printers while keeping them high on refills, reference to the Journal story.

“I won’t tweet this, but here’s a little news: how the heck do you think the printer business really operates?”,Hey Jeffrey Said.
