Dell, which lost a bidding war for storage vendor 3PAR in September, is offering about $876 million for Compellent Technologies, which is seen as offering the best chance for the computer maker to expand its data center technology business.

Dell and Compellent said Thursday in a joint statement that Dell latitude d420 battery was offering $27.50 per share in cash, which amounts to 18% less than Compellent’s valuation based on Wednesday’s stock closing price. Compellent shares have doubled in the last two months on speculation that it would be bought, and some analysts say Dell is likely to have to pay more. At the end of October, the company had $13.4 billion in cash and short-term investment.

Dell is going after Compellent as part of a major expansion of its Data Center Solutions unit, which sells servers, storage, and networking gear. Dell latitude d430 battery in June said it planned to generate $30 billion in sales from its data-center business by the end of fiscal 2014 from the $17 billion expected at the end of the current fiscal year ending in January. The expansion is key to raising Dell’s profitability. Storage-related sales carry much higher margins than PC desktops and laptops that made up 56% of Dell’s revenue in the third quarter.

Compellent is seen as Dell’s last chance at buying the storage technology it needs to battle rivals EMC, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM. Dell duked it out with HP over 3PAR and lost after failing in September to beat the latter’s offer of more than $2.3 billion. “It looks like a Hail Mary pass,” Benjamin Woo, analyst for market researcher IDC, said of the latest acquisition talks.

Storage Strategies for Modern Information Infrastructures

Compellent sells storage software and hardware that’s viewed as particularly useful to companies building cloud-computing environments, a major IT growth area. Compellent’s third-quarter results reflect the company’s success. Compellent reported a 15% increase in revenue as the number of customers grew from 179 to 2,303.

Despite the strength of Compellent’s technology, analysts disagree over whether Dell can make good use of it. Woo is concerned that Compellent’s products would confuse potential customers because the technology would compete directly with Dell’s EqualLogic product line. Compellent and EqualLogic are used by small to midsize companies. Neither is able to scale to the level needed by large corporations, which is why Dell had wanted 3PAR so badly; the company is already entrenched in the enterprise, according to experts.

Roger Cox, analyst for Gartner, is less concerned about the overlap, arguing that Dell and Compellent will eventually be able to re-architect the technology so it’s ready for the enterprise. “Compellent is really a good natural next step for Dell latitude c610 battery to enhance its storage portfolio,” Cox said.

Woo isn’t so sure, pointing out that Dell has never been a technology innovator and has never shown that it can rework products to do considerably more in areas critical to businesses, such as data centers. “This is a pure and simple gamble, and I’m not sure Dell and Compellent can pull it off,” he said.

One element analysts agree on is the future of Dell’s partnership with EMC, if it acquires Compellent. Dell sells EMC’s Clariion storage products, which also fit in the same mid-market as Compellent and EqualLogic. Industry observers do not expect Dell to continue selling Clariion aggressively to new customers, given that gross profit margins will be multiples higher with its own products. “There’s still going to be some kind of relationship, but it won’t be like it used to be,” Cox said.

Dell will likely continue to support current Clariion customers and sell the EMC product to customers who won’t consider anything else. That’s likely to make the relationship between EMC and Dell even more “fractious and contentious” then it has been, since Dell went after EMC rival 3PAR, Cox said.

Acer is voluntarily recalling Aspire notebooks(aspire 3000 battery) that contain a defective microphone cable which may overheat and cause the system to shut down.

The Taiwanese vendor said it had been made aware that the AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG models built before 15 September may be at risk of burnout.

“In the affected units the microphone cable may overheat when extreme pressure is applied repeatedly to the left palm rest. As a result, the unit case of aspire one battery may become deformed and the system may malfunction,” said Acer.

Consumers and SMEs can determine if their models are affected by entering a serial number of SNID on a section of its site aspire 3610 battery.

Jeremy Davies, senior partner at analyst Context said Acer was right to be upfront about the issue.

In November 2002,I was in the New York City audience  when Bill Gates strode onto the stage and introduced the world to the modern version of the tablet computer. With him were celebrities, including Rob Lowe and Amy Tan, and the CEOs of a handful of manufacturing partners, such as HP pavilion dv4t battery and Panasonic. Gates and Co. talked about tablet PCs as the future of computing.

Windows XP Tablet Edition, as it was called, relied on an active digitizer that interacted with a pen-sensitive screen to provide input. This hardware was combined with a suite of software so the digitizer — a fancy name for a mouse in the shape of a pen — could interact with on-screen buttons, as well as write text. Windows XP Tablet Edition was updated in 2005, but the revisions were minor.

More than seven years since that launch, Windows-based tablet computers haven’t evolved into much. The form factors are mostly the same, even though touch technology has leapt forward in capabilities. The new paradigm of computing that Gates spoke of never unfolded. At least, not yet.

Now,Apple(apple A1189) is re-imagining the tablet category with its iPad products. By taking a multitouch approach, Apple macbook pro 17 inch battery has opened up a whole new way to interact with its device.

For some, several features missing from the iPad’s first iteration, call into question its future in an enterprise environment.

For others, the device is “naturally corporate.” Its most fundamental design element — that it can be held with one hand — signals to one analyst, the iPad’s potential to be a great business device. For the enterprise that wants to deploy tablet PCs today, the point is moot. The iPad is months away from shipping.

For enterprises that need tablet power today, out in the real, rough-and-tumble world (including out in the elements), the usual list of suspects has your back. Here are some examples of tablet PCs that are available today from Dell(dell inspiron 1520 battery), HP, Lenovo(lenovo thinkpad t61 battery), Motion Computing, Panasonic, and Xplore Technologies. We’ll also take a peek at what’s on the horizon from Dell, Lenovo, Sony(sony pcga-bp2nx)and HP.

Hewlett-Packard(HP) has won a highly lucrative and bitterly contested battle against Kodak as the printer supplier for photo kiosks in thousands of Wal-Mart stores, giving HP pavilion dv4 batery a dynamic and long-lasting revenue stream for its ink, toner, and paper. Kodak’s loss inspired its CMO to tweet a message to HP saying, “Shame on your tactics.”

There is an article from Wall Street Journal:

The HP kiosk rollout, which Wal-Mart says will be completed by this summer, will dislodge existing photo booths made by Kodak, which has provided its kiosks to Wal-Mart since at least 2006.Wal-Mart has 8,416 retail units under various brand names in 15 countries. . . .”These kiosks stay installed for nine or 10 years,” H-P Chief Executive Mark Hurd told investors at a conference in San Francisco on Tuesday morning. HP(hp pavilion dv5 battery) gets “100% supplies connect,” he said, referring to the sales of the additional printing products.

Not surprisingly, the Kodak folks were less than pleased with Wal-Mart’s decision but turned their anger toward competitor HP instead of decision-maker Wal-Mart as Kodak CMO Jeffrey Hayzlett accused HP pavilion dv6 battery of cratering its prices on printers while keeping them high on refills, reference to  the Journal story.

“I won’t tweet this, but here’s a little news: how the heck do you think the printer business really operates?”,Hey Jeffrey Said.

In some respects, life as a laptop-carrying frequent flyer has gotten a little easier. Exhibit A: Though far from commonplace, it’s not freakishly bizarre anymore to find a power port at your airplane seat–even in coach. Virgin America and American Airlines are among the most generous airlines in terms of supplying power ports to passengers.

But it’s still way too easy to run out of juice in flight, or during the course of a long day away from a wall socket. Here are some tips for keeping your IBM laptop running as long as possible when you’re on the go.

Ditch the Peripherals, Tweak Settings

When you’re on the road, you can significantly conserve Thinkpad X40 battery power by dimming your laptop screen’s brightness. Make sure there are no CDs or DVDs sitting in your optical drive, and don’t connect any USB peripherals–all power hogs. Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 3G networking (you have to do that in flight anyhow).

Also, tweak your laptop’s power settings to conserve your IBM Thinkpad X41 battery. For example, in Windows Vista, go to Control Panel, Power Options and select the “Power saver” setting You can adjust the “Power saver” settings, if you want, or create your own power plan.

Buy a Second Battery

Many laptops today can run off two batteries. When the juice from the primary battery runs dry, the auxiliary kicks in. In most cases, the primary battery comes with the laptop; the second is an optional purchase. For example, HP’s EliteBook 6930p promises up to 24 hours of use from one charge–but only if you attach an optional, external 12-cell ultra-capacity battery pack ($189) as a secondary battery to augment the laptop’s internal, primary six-cell battery (There are other requirements, too, such as the need to downgrade to Windows XP.) Keep in mind that second battery packs, sometimes also called thinkpad r50e battery slices often add bulk and weight to your laptop.

Another option: Buy a portable fru 92p1121 battery pack. I like the Duracell Powersource Mobile 100 (about $110 and up online) because it lets you power a variety of devices, such as laptops, cell phones, portable DVD players, and video cameras, using their own power cords. By comparison, some portable power rechargers require special tips or cables to recharge your gear. The Duracell Powersource can also recharge two USB devices simultaneously with your laptop.

Looking for some original fireworks for your 4th of July celebration that will astound your neighbors, friends, and coworkers? The story give a suggest that you might want to purchase a Dell inspiron 1520 laptop computer: “Dell looking into exploding laptop report.”

According to the news story, “The Dell inspiron 630m laptop computer seen bursting into flames in photographs on the Internet was being examined as part of the company’s probe of the incident.” The laptop in question exploded at a conference in Osaka, Japan. Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said that it was too early to determine the cause of the explosion, but ”it did not appear that the incident had anything to do with the battery issues related to the recall [Dell in December 2005 issued a inspiron 640m battery recall for some of the batteries in its laptop due to overheating issues].”

I’ve heard of spontaneous combustion, but I don’t think laptops burst in flames for no apparent reason. Was it a setup? Perhaps there was an HP pavilion dv1000 representative at the conference who rigged the Dell explosion. You never know how tough the competition can get these days…. sheesh!

Simple as it may sound, batteries are the biggest differentiator between laptops and desktops. Unplug a desktop from the wall, and it shuts down; do the same with a notebook, and it might last a day (or so HP and Dell claim with their 24- and 19-hour batteries, respectively). Or, more realistically, anywhere from 90 minutes to 9 hours.

Regardless of capacity, all new laptop batteries are made up of lithium-ion cells and are rechargeable via A/C adapters. While some manufacturers make it more difficult than others to remove the battery, most make it simple to pop them in and out. This opens up the possibility for mobile professionals to tote a spare battery (sold separately). However, you are better off getting one battery that lasts a long time than lugging a spare; extra batteries are bulky, and you need to shut down your computer before inserting them.

In choosing or configuring an inspiron 6000 notebook, you may be presented with different battery sizes and capacities. We can help you decide which one is right for you. H

How Much Battery Life Do You Need?

If you plan to use your notebook away from your desk, you will want a bare minimum of three hours of endurance (with four to five hours being preferable), because even when carrying a notebook around the home or office, being chained to an outlet is extremely inconvenient. If you use your notebook in public places (coffee shops, outdoors, planes, etc), you want a minimum of four and a half hours of endurance (with six or more hours preferred).

Measuring Battery Capacity

While battery capacity is the most important factor affecting battery life, you can’t tell just from the battery specs how long a notebook will last. Some notebooks are more power efficient than others and, even with the same notebook, users themselves can have a big impact on battery life based on the power settings they use and the tasks they perform. For example, a quad-core gaming notebook may get less than two hours of endurance out of high-capacity battery, while an Asus eee pc netbook with a lower-capacity battery can last more than nine hours.

At LAPTOP, we test notebook battery life by running a custom script that surfs the Web continuously via Wi-Fi. See our “How We Test” section for more details.

However, it’s clear that the more wattage a battery provides (usually measured in either milliamps or killowatt hours), the better. Most vendors do not advertise the amount of wattage a battery provides, but rather the number of cells inside the battery. And more cells almost always equals more juice.

Choosing the Right Number of Cells

While there are batteries with two, four, or eight cells, most come in three-, six-, or nine-cell packs. If long battery life is important to you, always choose the the largest number of cells available. Whatever you do, don’t settle for a three-cell battery; notebooks and netbooks with three-cell batteries tend to get less than three hours of battery life. Batteries larger than six cells—often referred to as “extended batteries”—may add some extra bulk to your notebook, sticking out the back and adding a few tenths of a pound to the weight. However, if you need long endurance, this extra weight is worth it.

Secondary Batteries

Many business notebooks also provide the option to purchase a secondary battery, which kicks in when the main battery runs out of power. Secondary batteries typically slide into the optical drive bay (replacing the optical drive), or attach to the bottom as a battery slice. These secondary batteries add to the cost and sometimes the weight, and slices in particular can make a notebook less comfortable on your lap. However, they can add anywhere from two to six hours of endurance.

Long-Life/Prismatic Batteries

Over time, a typical notebook battery tends to lose its ability to retain a charge. After a year of use, the typical battery has lost 15 percent of capacity, and it quickly declines from there. A handful of new batteries, such as HP’s pavilion dv9000 battery (made by battery manufacturer Boston Power), use oval-shaped prismatic cells to maintain their ability to hold a charge over time. The Enviro batteries, for example, are guaranteed to last at least three years. While this new kind of battery is a rare option, it is definitely preferable when available.

Step 1
Turn off the laptop and eject the battery. To avoid risking injury, you must shut down the laptop and remove the battery before attempting to install a new hard drive. This will prevent electricity from traveling through the laptop while you are working on it. Turn the laptop off through the Windows operating system and close the lid. Place the laptop upside down on a flat, level surface so that you can easily access the bottom of the laptop. Remove the battery by sliding the battery lock—found directly above the battery compartment—to the “unlocked” position. Open the battery bay and lift or slide the battery out. Wait until your Acer laptop computer has cooled off before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2
Locate the hard drive compartment and remove the cover. Most Acer laptops store the hard drive in its own compartment near the battery for easy removal and installation. Check the user guide that came with your laptop to be sure which compartment contains the hard drive on your specific Acer model(Aspire 3020 battery). Use a laptop screwdriver to remove the two screws that secure the cover to the laptop, then lift the cover to remove it.

Step 3
Replace the old hard drive with the new one. When you open the hard drive compartment, you will see a removable metal cage. This is not the hard drive, but a protective compartment in which the hard drive is mounted. Carefully lift and pull the right edge of the hard drive cage to disconnect it from the motherboard. Use a laptop screwdriver to remove the screws securing the hard drive to the cage. After you remove the old hard drive, insert the new one into the metal cage, and then replace the screws. Slide the hard drive cage back into the compartment to connect it to the motherboard. Replace the hard drive compartment cover and secure its two screws to complete installation of the hard drive.

Step 4
Install Windows, software, and Acer drivers and utilities. Insert the battery back into its compartment and reconnect the laptop’s power cord, cables and peripherals. To use the new hard drive, insert the recovery disk that came with your Acer laptop(say Acer aspire 3610 laptop) to begin the installation of Windows and the drivers and utilities you need to operate the laptop. This includes drivers and utilities for the modem, sound card, touchpad and video card. Install any programs and transfer any files you want stored on the new hard drive.
